Advice On Weight Loss
posted on 04/28/2009
I felt the same way recently so I got a bike and started riding everywhere - to school, to friend's places, pretty much everywhere that I go - and I it's made a real difference to my weight, muscle tone and most importantly it's fun.
Part of my problem was that I didn't really want to exercise because I find it really boring but I don't like being stuck at home either. I tried jogging for a while and it was OK but it really does get old after a while. Swimming is good but at the end of the day you're getting fit but you feel like you're going nowhere. I even tried two very different martial arts - Aikido and Capoeira - and they were both fantastic in their ways but I can't help feeling a little silly doing those movements. I mean seriously.
That's where pedalling really comes in to it's own. It's not boring because you're not riding for the sake of riding, you're riding to go somewhere. You can take any route you wish, you can go as fast or as slow as you like and you don't have to wait for someone to drive you.
Now, you will get bored of riding a bike and there's nothing you can do about that. The good news here is that once you've gotten over riding everywhere you'll be amazed how enjoyable running is again. It uses your leg muscles completely differently and you have so much freedom of movement - jumping, climbing, etc. Just beware of stairs, they feel just like your pedalling a bike again - but everything else is suddenly new. For a while.
When you finally get back on your bike - probably running late for school - and rediscover how cool it is to push it hell for leather when you're on a time limit you'll probably be hooked for life. From the two stages above you'll have built up enough leg and lower body strength and stamina to pretty much go anywhere on a bike. By this stage you'll even notice that with the help of a few shortcuts through parks and parking spaces you'll be getting there faster than a car which is pretty awesome in my opinion.
But always wear your helmet!
