Advice On Earning A Black Belt
posted on 06/11/2009
So you want to become a black belt? I applaud your ambition. This article will describe the process of becoming a black belt.
I received my 1st degree black belt in Taekwondo after 4 years of training. That was in 2005, and I have continued to participate since then. I have participated in many tournaments and have been a member of demonstration teams. Needless to say, Taekwondo has been a large part of my life for many years. I will start off by saying that every school is different. Every one requires different things to achieve a black belt. Achieving this rank took me 4 years, but others take longer and shorter amounts of time.
The first step I would take is to find a school. This is probably the most important step. This school will nurture you in the martial arts, and shape much of who you will become as a person. Choose wisely. The next step is to simply participate. Give 100% at every practice. Take it step by step. If you concentrate solely on achieving the rank of black belt, you will lose appreciation for the process of moving up through the ranks.
Once you proceed high enough in the ranks, you will have to take your black belt test. This was the hardest thing I have ever had to physically complete. Mine was 4 hours long, but once again it may be different in other schools. Once you reach the rank of black belt, after many years, you realize that this is only the beginning. Earning this rank is not the end by any means. It is now that you learn how to teach and perfect all of your movements.
Overall, this is not an easy thing to achieve, but it is very rewarding. Search out some schools and do your research, and good luck to you!
