Advice On Maintaining Your Internet Security
posted on 07/31/2009
The internet is a very important tool in our society without which many people would find it very hard to conduct their businesses and make their living. From jobs, shopping to banking the internet plays a pivotal role. This also makes the internet prone to many security threats that can lead to information loss and even money. Some of the most common forms of security threats include spam mail, spyware, and phishing and identity theft.
Spam includes unsolicited mail mostly trying to sell you some stuff. Sometimes these mails contain links that can introduce spyware, viruses or open gateways for more spam mail. To prevent this it is good to avoid opening links on suspected spam mail. Spyware and cookies observe your online activities enabling information and identity theft. Once hackers obtain your personal information they can make purchases using your credit cards or even create false documents.
The latest type of threat is phishing whereby you receive mail from someone pretending to be a legitimate source such as your bank or even an online store such as EBay. Once you open links contained in the mail you will be redirected to the hacker's site where they steal your personal information for their own use. Updating your web browser for phishing detection can offer you some sort of protection against this threat.
The most effective way to maintain internet security is to invest in a good internet security software. This should contain anti spyware and phishing detection as well as an anti virus. You should also make sure the firewall feature in your operating system is turned on to prevent any unauthorized access. One grave mistake people make is to rely on free anti spyware. Most of them do not work and others are spywares themselves. Downloading of freeware is also a risky trend and should be avoided.
