Advice On Bedwetting
posted on 10/10/2009
Even though you are eleven years old the first thing you need to do is not feel guilty. I used to wet the bed also when I was a child. It wasn't because I was lazy and didn't feel like getting out of bed and I don't remember being awake when the deed was done.
As long as you are not doing it on purpose there is no need to feel guilt. It helps also if your parents don't make you feel guilty. Even so, just as if you were to spill a glass of water or juice on the kitchen floor, it would be your responsibility to do the cleaning up.
To protect your mattress you could ask your parents to buy a shower curtain. Put that on your bed first, then the mattress cover, then make the bed up with sheets and blankets as you normally would. Plastic sheets are also available but that might be uncomfortable, especially in the summer. Taking the sheets off and making sure they are ready for the laundry is important. Hopefully your parents will allow you to remake the bed after school but if you have the time in the morning, do it then.
Anything that you do continuously for 28 days, scientists say will become a habit. To curb the bedwetting, set your alarm clock to go off half way into your sleep. For instance, if your bed time is nine o'clock and you wake up at six o'clock for school, your clock should be set for 1:30 am. Adjust the hours for your circumstance. Your body normally wants to awake around 3:00 am for some reason regardless. I know this is true for adults so it might be true for children too. You know your body better than anyone.
After a month of getting up every night to go to the bathroom it should have become a habit and you won't need the alarm anymore. This course of action is actually one that I recommend you try second.
Even better than doing that would be to make sure that you stop drinking at least an hour before bedtime. That includes any water you might drink while brushing your teeth. Keep away from caffeinated drinks like soda, tea and coffee. Be patient and use this time to learn your body's habits. If you can train your body by not drinking an hour before bedtime you might not need to resort to the alarm clock method.
I hope and pray your parents are a help and not a hindrance. They should not make you feel guilty or pressure you. You should lend a hand in the clean up process. If none of these methods help after several months you might see a doctor who can prescribe medication that will deter urine production while you sleep. I don't recommend that method unless you are 15 or 16. I detest unnecessary medicine. I hope the best for you.
