Advice On Keeping Your Bathroom & Kitchen Really Clean
posted on 10/17/2009
There might be billions of germs and bateria in your bathroom or kitchen. A recent test I saw on a television show, I don't recall which one, let a couple know that they had germs in their bathroom that could cause many different diseases and there were even traces of fecal matter in the kitchen sink. As a rule kitchens are more contaminated than most bathrooms (about 500,000 germs psi).
It is a good idea to clean your counter tops, kitchen sink, faucet and handles at least every other day with a mixture of chlorine bleach and warm water. A 1:5 ratio is adequate mixture. Everytime you run the dishwasher you should include space in the silverware tray for the sponges and dishrags. They can harbor germs and while you may think you are cleaning your kitchen table or counters, in reality you could be spreading E. coli, and salmonella throughout the house. The dry cycle of the dishwasher gets hot enough to kill most germs found in the kitchen including feces.
This might surprise some but urine splatter from when both males and females releave themselves can reach the sink, the bathtub, towels, toothbrushes and doorknobs. It is recommended that bathroom surfaces be cleaned at least more than once per week. Also, when cleaning the bathroom you want to use three different rags. One strictly for the bathtub and shower area. One for the sink and one for the toilet. The toilet itself should always have the seat down before flushing. An invisible areo-spray is created by the centrifugal force of a flush and just like urine splatter can travel great distances.
CLEANING TIPS
Vinegar is surprisingly great for cleaning and sanitizing. We have very hard city water and the only way my dishes come out of the dishwasher without a white film all over them is to put a a quarter cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle. Vinegar will also keep the streaks in your toilet bowl away. A quarter cup left in the bowl over night will do the trick.
White wine will remove lime scale from your shower doors and shower curtains.
Soap scum on shower doors will disappear when rubbed with a used dryer sheet.
Half a lemon and a couple of ice cubes will clean your kitchen disposal and leave a pleasant lemon scent for hours.
In addition...
You should also wash your hands after doing the laundry. Handling cloth diapers or underwear potentially puts you in contact with a gram or more of feces per pair. It's expensive for some folks, however it is recommended that all underwear get its own load on Hot.
